She's My Hero project highlights

She’s My Hero Event Highlights

What a whirlwind! On Wednesday night at Boone Hall, we had our BIG reveal at the She’s My Hero Calendar Launch Party to benefit the Center for Women. The weather threatened rain(and lots of it) earlier in the day, but we said RAIN or SHINE… it’s on! It turned out to be a warm evening with a cool breeze outside where guests enjoyed the marsh view on the Cotton Dock and the delicious paella, tacos, and noodle dishes from the Dashi Food Truck.  Throughout the night, guests enjoyed the music and the magical lighting from Lowcountry Entertainment.  Lovely flower arrangements in purple and white from Petaloso decorated the tables, and Justin Wham Weddings and Events helped coordinate, set up, provided the cozy seating area near the fireplace, and made sure the stage and the whole space was beautiful along with the rentals from Eventworks. And who doesn’t love something sweet?  Sweet Lulu‘s Bakery, Cocktail Caravan & Pedal Pub brought the wine, sangria, and a mouth watering selection of mini desserts.

Here’s just a quick look at some of the highlights:

It was only fitting that our Emcee was Erin Keinzle of Lowcountry Live, as she helped announced the contest that started it all back in February.  At the event after welcoming everyone, Erin introduced Lisa Dabney, Executive Director of the Center for Women, who talked more about what the Center does for women in business and their upcoming conference in November. Then, we (Wanda and Mell Bell) shared some personal stories and the WHY behind this whole event– to celebrate women, of course and tell their struggles and their stories. We also thanked several of the sponsors, such as Skirt Charleston whose mission is to celebrate and empower women with attitude.

And finally, it was the time we have been waiting for ALL YEAR LONG… revealing the hero photos to the women in the calendar and the whole world. Their reactions were heartfelt and priceless as they saw themselves as their heroes for the first time! The calendar sales opened, and the silent auction continued NOW with the canvas portraits of the Heroes as part of it.

100%… yes all of the proceeds of the silent auction and calendar went directly to the Center for Women. And at the end of the night, we raised almost $5,000, and it’s still climbing!

The fund raising continues as The She’s My Hero Calendars will be on sale for $20 each through the Center for Women. Get your calendar at their conference at Trident Technical College on Nov 15 and 16th or contact them for more info.

She’s My Hero Project Announcement Video

It’s been a dream of ours for a long time to create a great fundraiser to celebrate and support women in our community. We didn’t want to do it alone because together we can make an even bigger difference in our world. So, we created the She’s My Hero Project to raise funds for the Center for Women. We chose the Center for Women as our charity because they truly help women succeed personally and professionally through education, skill building, networking, and much more. In addition to raising funds, we also want to raise awareness about their programs to help even more women. Check out the video below for our big announcement from our appearance on Lowcountry Live:

Faces of mellBella

Who are the women that we photograph at mellBella? They are women just like you.

Women with kids. Women without kids. Women battling infertility or miscarriages. Women in a great relationship. Women who got out of an abusive relationship. Women not in a relationship. Women about to get married. Women celebrating an anniversary. Women no longer married. Women who have never been married. Women celebrating goals or their birthdays. Women who need a break. Women who need to feel beautiful inside and out. Women who volunteer. Women who don’t take care of themselves because they are too busy taking care of others. Women caring for sick or dying family members.  Women who have lost weight. Women who have gained weight. Women whose bodies have changed with health or life in general. Women fighting or have fought depression, post partum, eating disorders, diabetes, cancer, and so many more difficulties.

Women with stretch marks, cellulite, age spots, wrinkles, big breasts, small or no breasts, tall, short,  thick hair, thinning hair, and everything inbetween. Women of different ages, races, sizes, and shapes.  Stay-at-home moms. Working mothers. Professional women. Military. First Responders. Strong women.  Strong women who feel weak. Awkward women. Silly women. Women who want to feel valued. Women who want to feel good about themselves. Women who come to our studio just as they are with the hopes of liking 1 or 2 photos of themselves for the first time in their lives. Women who generally like photos of themselves. Women who give and give and give some more. Women who want to show that they’ve still got it.

But one of the things that connects them all is that ALL women are beautiful. Women who are beautiful but don’t know it. Women who are beautiful inside and out. Women who want to see the beauty that others see in them. These women are just like you.

So, here’s to you, Bella. Thank you for everything that you are despite the struggles you are facing. Thank you for your trust in us. We love you!

One Image Wednesday – Pinup

This Wednesday, we are talking about pinup photography. It’s flirty and fun photography with a retro twist. Imagine yourself in the glamorous hair, makeup, and clothing styles from the 40s, 50s, or 60s.  Or you can pick another time period, if you like. Your transformation starts with hair and makeup styling, then add some pearls, some vintage props, and imagination to take you back in time and around the world. At mellBella, we spend some extra time and magic to transport you to the wild, wild west, across the pond, or who knows? We even have a selection of outfits and accessories that you can borrow from the mellBella Closet as part of your session. Of course, you will want to bring at least 2 outfits or more or even you’re whole closet. We’ll help you pick the best looks for your pinup journey.  So whether you want to be Marilyn Monroe or Bettie Page, we have lots of ideas for you. Where do you want to go?

Rockabillaque 2015 Recap: Night Fashion Show

lowcountry highrollers team

Lowcountry Highrollers Team

A few months ago, our studio was full with almost 40 women in skates. Why skates, you ask? They are the proud, the strong, the beautiful, and dare I say, bad ass women of Charleston’s own roller derby team The Lowcountry Highrollers. Be sure to check them out at their next bout and follow them on Facebook for some extra awesomeness.

We took tons of photos, and our fabulous artist composited the individual photos to create the huge team photo seen above. Special thanks to the amazing styling of Sarah Pearson- Hair and Makeup Artistry who worked tirelessly all day with her team to bring a little extra va-va-voom. Here’s just a few of their fierce and fun individual photos. We love The Lowcountry Highrollers!
